As we all know, flu is an acute viral infection typical for Latvia. It is spread through droplets in the air when a person talks, coughs, or sneezes. The influenza virus is spreading very rapidly and people’s susceptibility to it is very high. The virus causes both mild and severe complications, which may even cause death. The flu is more severe for young children and for people after the age of 60-65, and for patients with chronic diseases.
Flu symptoms are high temperature (often above 38⁰C), dry cough, severe headache, fever, fatigue, runny or congested nose, and muscle pain.
In order to strengthen the organism, it is necessary to drink enough water every day, to eat whole foods including fresh fruit and vegetables, to spend time in fresh air and to dress according to weather conditions, and to devote sufficient time to physical activity and enough time to sleep and rest.
However, the most important prevention of flu is annual vaccination.
The flu vaccine is prepared from the two most frequent subtypes of influenza A virus and subtypes of the existing annual influenza B virus. Immunity after vaccination develops within seven to ten days. However, vaccination may also be done during an outbreak of influenza, as it helps to treat the flu in a mild form and does not result in complications after recovery.
